As of mid-October, Mt. Rose hasn't said when its lifts will start turning. The Sierra Sun's preseason roundup of Tahoe resorts lists other mountains' opening days, and next to Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe it reads "to be determined." Northstar and Heavenly are targeting Nov. 20, and Palisades Tahoe has scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 25. Diamond Peak is aiming for Dec. 3. All of those dates depend on weather and conditions. So the closest ski area to Reno, about 25 miles up SR-431, is the one without even a target date.
The rest of the season is mostly decided already: what's new on the mountain, which days each pass covers, how parking works, and which nearby deadlines arrive before the first chair runs. Reno skiers can plan around the one unknown because the other pieces are already known.
The Unknown Has a Track Record
Mt. Rose's last three openings show how wide the window can be.
| Season | Opening day | What ran first |
|---|---|---|
| 2023–24 | Friday, Nov. 10 | Lakeview Express and three named trails |
| 2024–25 | Friday, Nov. 8 | Lakeview Express and Magic Conveyor |
| 2025–26 | Friday, Nov. 21 | Opened at 9 a.m. after a hoped-for Nov. 8 start slipped |
| 2026–27 | Not yet announced | Visit Reno Tahoe projects Friday, Nov. 20 |
According to the Reno Gazette Journal, Mt. Rose had hoped to open last season on Nov. 8, but "warm temperatures didn't agree." It opened two weeks later. The Nov. 20 date on the Visit Reno Tahoe page is the bureau's own projection, not an announcement from the resort, and the page says to check dates again.
The 2026–27 outlook raises expectations for snow but brings back the same problem that delayed last year's opening. In July, News 4 reported Nevada State Climatologist Baker Perry's explanation that strong El Niño events have historically pushed a more active storm track into California, with stronger Pacific storms and above-normal Sierra precipitation. He also cautioned that warmer storms can push rain and snow levels higher. In August, the Tahoe Daily Tribune covered OpenSnow's seasonal forecast. It favors above-normal snowfall for Tahoe, with the strongest stretch from January through March, and also flags warmer-than-average temperatures and a possible slow start in December.
Put the table and the forecast together and the likely picture is a big winter overall, with a November opening that still depends on temperature. The forecast doesn't remove that uncertainty, and that's why the rest of this post covers what you can lock in now.
What Changed on the Mountain This Summer
Mt. Rose put close to $2 million into improvements before this season. Most of the list improves the existing operation rather than adding new terrain:
- Snowmaking. The main line of the snowmaking system was replaced.
- Grooming. A new PistenBully grooming machine joins the fleet, and two new utility ATVs go to the operations team.
- Lifts. The Chuter was retrofitted over the summer, so every lift at Mt. Rose now has restraint bars.
- Main Lodge. A lobby redesign moved Guest Services and Season Pass sales to improve how people move through the space.
- Online and rentals. A new e-commerce site promises better transaction processing, and the rental fleet has new equipment options.
Of everything on that list, the snowmaking line is the item tied most directly to opening day, since the table above shows temperature has been the deciding variable.
The largest project won't affect skiers this season. SnowBrains reports that preliminary site work started this summer for an $11 million Mountain Operations facility, which will be built next year off the road to Lot 7. It will add vehicle-maintenance bays and bring all outdoor mountain operations together in one area.
Wildslide Has a Date Even Though the Ski Area Doesn't
The tubing park sets its own calendar. Wildslide Snow Tubing Park's site already says "Opening Thanksgiving 2026," which this year is Thursday, Nov. 26. The tubing lift now has an enclosure so riders are sheltered on the way up, and a new LED sign at the lift will post updates. Wildslide Lodge will open this winter with food and beverage, indoor seating, ticket sales and retail. Wildslide's own pages give conflicting hours, and its pricing page was last updated in 2025, so check session times and rates directly before you book.
The Pass Calendar Is Already Set
The void dates for each pass are already published. The current Mt. Rose season pass page lists four adult tiers:
| Pass | Adult (16+) | Child (6–15) | Renewal, adult | Where the limits fall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premier | $1,175 | $515 | $875 | No void dates |
| Classic | $975 | $415 | $675 | Void Nov. 27–28, Dec. 26–30, Jan. 16–17, Feb. 13–15 |
| Off-Peak | $775 | $365 | $475 | No weekends in January or February |
| Select | $425 | n/a | $375 | One chosen midweek day each week, holidays excluded |
The Classic void dates line up with this season's other big days. Nov. 27–28 is the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, the same weekend Wildslide plans to open. The Off-Peak pass leaves November, December, March and April weekends open but removes Saturdays and Sundays in January and February, the months OpenSnow's forecast favors for the most snow. The Mt. Rose site lists MLK weekend as Jan. 16–18 on its perks page and Jan. 16–17 on its pass page, so confirm those dates on the pass page itself.
The season pass perks include two discounted buddy tickets for Premier, Classic and Off-Peak holders. All four tiers get $10 off Wildslide tickets, up to four tickets per pass. The official pass page doesn't post a price-increase deadline.
Parking Is Where Mt. Rose Now Stands Apart
The biggest regional change this winter happens before you reach the lift line. Mt. Rose's snow report page advertises "ALWAYS FREE PARKING – Carpool Encouraged" and doesn't mention any advance reservation. Other resorts are moving the opposite direction:
- Sierra-at-Tahoe will require parking reservations until noon on weekends and holiday periods from Dec. 19, 2026, through April 4, 2027. Reservations are free for Sierra passholders and for cars with four or more people, and $25 a day for everyone else. Passholders can hold up to four active reservations at once. After noon, no reservation is needed, depending on availability.
- Palisades Tahoe is keeping reservations for all lots on weekends and selected holidays, listed from Dec. 5, 2026, through April 11, 2027. Most spaces are free, and advance paid spaces cost $30.
- Diamond Peak keeps general parking free and sells preferred slope-side reservations for $30 on weekends and $35 on holidays.
For a Reno household, that means a Saturday at Mt. Rose takes no advance booking, while a Saturday at Sierra or Palisades now means reserving a spot or showing up after the cutoff. None of the material reviewed for this post mentions a new public or private ski shuttle from Reno. Sky Tavern's bus from Wooster and Reed High Schools serves its youth program, at $18 per ride day.
The drive itself works the same way it always has. The Nevada Department of Transportation lists SR-431 as a road where, during chain restrictions, vehicles without chains must be four-wheel or all-wheel drive with snow tires. Nevada doesn't use California's "chains mandatory" condition. Our earlier guide to winterizing Reno homes covers the driveway side of the same storms.
Two Dates Nearby That Come First
Mt. Rose may not have a date yet, but nearby resorts do, and two of them land before any likely opening day.
- Diamond Peak's preseason pricing ends Oct. 31. After that, its adult pass goes from $588 to $733 for purchases from Nov. 1 through Dec. 18. Youth passes go from $495 to $618, and child passes from $282 to $341. The resort's 60th-anniversary season adds two TechnoAlpin snow guns, longer 2.5-hour beginner group lessons, and Friday Fundays DJ events.
- Sierra-at-Tahoe's pass page warns that prices rise after Oct. 12, which is today.
Closer to home, Sky Tavern, the nonprofit community hill on Mt. Rose Highway, runs on a different schedule. Its FAQ says the program typically starts in mid-January and runs for eight weekends. New this year, Sky Tavern offers a Teen Mountain Volunteer Program for ages 12 to 17 at $299, and an Integrity Membership at $699 for adults who want lift access without a volunteer role. Its posted price increase took effect Oct. 5.
From here, the remaining question is temperature. Over the last three seasons, Mt. Rose has opened as early as Nov. 8 and as late as Nov. 21, and Wildslide plans to start tubing on Thanksgiving whenever the main lifts open.
